Career Coaching

WORK WITH A QUEER PEER

Your career should work for your actual life, and the strategy to get there should account for what makes your situation specific: your identity, your timeline, your needs, your definition of success. Let’s build something that honors who you are and what you need.

Business Colleagues

I SUPPORT LGBTQ+ PROFESSIONALS AND ALLIES WHO ARE READY TO:

Build a network strategically and sustainably, without it feeling extractive

Learn practical skills and frameworks they can apply long after our work together

Evaluate work opportunities through the lens of what they actually need

Plan career transitions that account for both personal and professional priorities

Highlight career growth, accomplishments, and impact in their application materials

Have meaningful conversations about career goals with peers, managers, and loved ones

MY STYLE & APPROACH

Hey there, I'm Alex Lahmeyer (they/them).

A lot of career guidance treats everyone the same. I help LGBTQ+ professionals and allies build strategies that actually work for their lives by starting with what they need.

I bring calm to the chaos of career transitions, ask the questions that surface what’s actually going on, and help you find the throughlines in your experience. I believe most career decisions are better made from a grounded place than a reactive one, and a lot of what I do is help you slow down enough to choose well.

I was born and raised in a community with pervasive homophobia, so I recognize that every step forward is a conscious one. And that often means figuring out how to take risks in pursuit of better opportunities. Whenever you feel stuck, I see it as a chance to center your needs. You know yourself better than you think you do.

WHAT I BRING:

  • I understand how hiring works. I’m a former recruiting professional who’s reviewed resumes, worked with candidates, and implemented hiring practices at different companies.

  • I know how to vet employers and identify red flags. I’ve helped 25+ organizations establish inclusive workplace practices and can help you figure out what to look for.

  • I know how to chart a course. I have nearly a decade of strategic planning experience to help people identify goals and build action plans.

  • I bring frameworks you can use long after our work ends. I'll help you adopt tools and ways of thinking you’ll be able to flex again the next time something shifts.

  • My career has been nonlinear. I’ve made some major pivots and can speak from inside the experience of building something different.

Working Together

Working with Alex was truly a turning point for me. Through our journey together, they helped me see that I get to define my own work criteria—from seeking neurodivergent-friendly environments to naming my ideal manager and team. After years of feeling stuck and deeply unhappy in roles that didn’t align with my values, this reframing was a game-changer. Alex brings an incredible depth of presence and care to their coaching, which made it feel safe to open up about my real hopes and dreams. Because of their guidance, I now approach career opportunities with discernment and confidence rather than urgency or fear. As a first-generation femme of color navigating an uncertain job market, that shift has been profoundly empowering.

You can see my current packages on Topmate, each with a set duration and the option to extend.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who do you coach?

I work with LGBTQ+ professionals and allies—mostly mid-career—who are considering or actively making a career change. Many of my clients are questioning or leaving roles that stopped fitting their lives, whether that's burnout, a mission-driven job that turned toxic, or an industry that no longer makes sense for them.

Do I have to be LGBTQ+ to work with you?

Nope. Allies are welcome, and plenty of my clients are. I'm a queer, non-binary career coach, and my approach is built for people whose identity shapes their career decisions, but the core work (getting clear on what you want and building a plan to get there) applies to anyone.

Do you only work with clients in the San Francisco Bay Area?

I'm based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but all of my coaching happens over video, and I've been working remotely since 2020. I collaborate with people all over the world.

How does a coaching engagement work?

We meet every two weeks over video for three to six months, and each session builds on the last. Between sessions you'll work through exercises in a shared workbook, and after each session I send a summary with action items. You can email me with quick questions anytime in between.

How much does career coaching cost?

Current packages and pricing are always listed on my Topmate page, so that's the most up-to-date place to look. Every engagement starts with a free consultation, where we can talk through what you're working on and which option makes sense for you.

Can you help me change careers?

Yes, that's often a primary focus in the work: a move within your current company, a new industry, and a completely new role in a new industry each take a different level of investment. Part of our work together is developing a plan that is both actionable and realistic.

Will you tell me what career I should pursue?

No, and that's on purpose. Coaching is a thinking partnership: I'll ask hard questions, help you explore options, and keep you on course, but you're the expert on your life. Clients leave with more clarity about what they want, more confidence advocating for it, and next steps they're already executing.

Can you help me figure out if an employer is actually LGBTQ-inclusive?

Yes. I've helped 25+ organizations build inclusive workplace practices, so I know what good looks like from the inside and where the red flags hide. I also co-created a free Employer Research Guide for LGBTQ+ Professionals, available in my Resource Hub.

How can I get a sense of your vibe and approach before we talk?

My Media page is the best place to start. It includes articles and recordings where I share how I think about careers, hiring, and what it takes to build a workplace where LGBTQ+ people can do their best work. You can also subscribe to The Next Chapter, my career planning newsletter for LGBTQ+ professionals, for a regular dose of how I approach complex career topics. And if you want the real thing, the free consultation is a low-pressure way to see what working together feels like.
